6 Main Problems With Your Lawn
-Poor drainage- When water stands on turf or saturates the soil, grass struggles. Moisture-loving weeds move in and diseases thrive. If the problem is minor, simply aerating may solve it. If the problem is more serious regrading or the installation of drainage tiles may be needed.
-Poor watering- Over-watering is as bad as poor drainage. Watering to much weakens plant roots, which provides a breding ground for disease.
-Slopes- Soil drains irregularly on uneven ground. Sloping turf is also hard to maintain properly. This makes them more likely to have weeds. If regrading is not an option, consider ground cover instead of turf grass.
-Shade- Most turf grasses thrive in the sun. In the shade turf thins out. Grass blades become spindly and allows weeds to take over. Some turf grasses are shade tolerant, but few thrive in the shade. Reducing the amount of shade, mowing higher, fertilizing less, and watering deeply can help turf withstand shade.
-Poor Mowing- Mowing too low and too infrequently weaken turf and are the most common cause of weeds and disease. Higher, regular mowing is a natural way to eliminate a lot of turf problems.
-Traffic- Traffic breaks turf and compacts soil. Weeds are more adapted to compacted soils and can take over heavy traffic areas. Wear-resistant grasses or hard-scapes such as paver or brick paths are common solutions.
